RESTAURANT: Salad Republic – Irvine

Guess what? I woke up this morning and my refrigerator was empty. Okay, well, not EMPTY, but also not bursting with lunch opportunities. So… it would have to be an eat-out-lunch kind of day.

My news story took me to Irvine, where I have a few good usual lunch spots, but since I had a little time, I thought I’d try something different. So I googled healthy food in Irvine and found the Salad Republic. Skimming the about us page on their website, they hit on a few key words I look for (local farmers, natural, organic) so I decided to give it a try.

They had a ton of stuff on the menu that sounded great, like a roasted vegetable sandwich with an artichoke spread on artisan bread (handcrafted daily) , or the Tomato Basil Soup, or the Design Your Own salad, but I decided to order the first thing that really struck me on the menu.

The Roasted Butternut Squash Salad $7.50

The way my day usually goes, I can’t take too much time for lunch, and this place was PERFECT. The food came out FAST. I went in about 1:30 pm, so it was post lunch rush, ordered at the counter, went to the restroom, and by the time I came out, she was already carrying my food to the table. Fantastic! Great, healthy food FAST!

And the salad… Mmmm… everything I love, roasted squash, spinach, goat cheese. The salad had glorious color and flavor. Since I’m super paranoid about salad dressing, I skipped it, and ate it plain, but it didn’t matter. The squash had so much flavor, along with the creamy goat cheese, that I honestly didn’t miss the dressing. (P.S. I sent an email asking about the dressings and got a lovely response saying that they get their dressings pre-made from a vendor, but next time I’m in, they’d be happy to let me see the ingredients!)

I did however make one mistake. The salad had the option of ordering with chicken or steak for a dollar fifty more, and I didn’t, so I actually left feeling a bit hungry–so if you’re on the hungrier side, be sure to add some meat or get one of their fantastic sides. Granted, I burn a lot of calories in a day doing my job so I tend to need a heartier lunch and have to remind myself to eat protein, so that’s my fault, not the restaurant.

The one downside… parking. It’s right across from the UCI campus in the University Town Center, and the parking lot is always a madhouse. BUT… the place is definitely worth it.

I will most certainly make my way to the SALAD REPUBLIC next time I’m in the area.
